Networking, how do you do that?

Networking is important, we all know that. However, in practice it can sometimes be difficult to efficiently expand your circle of contacts. Some people prefer to do this through LinkedIn, but you also have networking events and flex workplaces are also ideal for making new business contacts. We tell you exactly what networking is, what the goal is and what good network conversation questions are. Networking, how do you do that?

What is networking?

Networking is making and maintaining contacts (both online and offline). Your network can then help you in your work, career and private life. Not only should you benefit from it, but your contacts should too. For example, it can help you find a suitable job or assignment, and you can also help someone else with that. Networking is give and take. Do you want to expand your business circle of contacts? It is important that you actively work on this. You have different ways to have a good networking conversation and places where you can find the right people.

What is the purpose of networking?

The purpose of networking is to share knowledge, information and contacts. When you actively work on this, your business circle will automatically nominate you for new positions, assignments and challenges. The bigger your network, the bigger the chances! It offers access to many specialists from different fields. Do you have a question about marketing? That strategist from your circle of contacts probably has the solution ready for you. Next time you offer your knowledge.

What is a network call?

Network conversations allow you to collect tips, advice and information about the industry and/or company that interests you. You will see business from the perspective of a professional. You must be able to profile yourself in the conversation and tell them where you would like to go with your career and why. It could also be that you don't quite know what you want yet. Then a network conversation can help with orientation. In such a conversation you make clear to each other what you do, where your knowledge lies and what you can be deployed for.

Make a network call

no pressure! You don't have to be nervous for a network conversation. You just get to know each other. The following four moments are always discussed in the conversation itself:

  • Personal introduction: introduce yourself and indicate what your goal is for the conversation. Get to know each other better!
  • Starting points: emphasize why you want to speak to your conversation partner and what you can do for each other.
  • Ask questions: ask questions about the industry, company and job of your conversation partner.
  • Closing a network conversation: thank your conversation partner and ask for tips and advice if necessary. You may get a suggestion for a network conversation with someone else.
